Lost at Sea Puzzle

The Puzzle

A man was stranded in the middle of the ocean, he was approached by 3 married couples on their boat, the franks, the tims and the sams. they said if he can solve who the captain of the boat is they would save him, if not they would leave him stranded.

Here are the hints they gave him.

the captain is one of the husbands, 

all wives are either always lying or always telling the truth. 

and all the husbands also all lie or all tell the truth. 

They also tell you none of the couples here are both liars.

Then they each proceed to tell you one thing

Mr. Frank: I am not the captain

Mrs. Frank: The captain was born in Italy

Mr. Tim: Mr. Frank is not the Captain

Mrs. Tim: The captain was born in Spain

Mr. Sam: I am not the Captain

Mrs. Sam: Mr. Frank is the Captain

So who is the captain and why?

The Answer

If Mr. Sam is the Captain then both Mr. and Mrs. Sam are making false statements, contrary to the hints. Therefore Mr. Cog is not the Captain.

Now, Mr. Frank and Mr. Tim are in agreement, hence they are both telling the truth or both lying.

If they were both lying, their wives Mrs. Frank and Mrs. Tim would both be truthful which is impossible, since they can’t both be right.

Therefore Mr. Ark and Mr. Bog are both telling the truth, hence their statements are both true.

Which means that Mr. Frank is not the Captain. Therefore Mr. Tim is the Captain.
